You’re probably familiar with Jesse James Garrett’s diagram of the Elements of User Experience. It covers all the discrete areas that we often just call “UX” and expect some UX elf to work magic. But there are distinctions to be made and specialties to consider when it comes to designing a site, an app or your entire organization’s design strategy.
Smarter Parking Mobile App Design
For IBM employees, often in large office complexes, needing an internal system for managing their parking needs.
IBM Watson AlchemyVision Face-tagging Mobile Application
Designing a phone app using the Watson AlchemyVision Face-tagging functionality. In short, this was uses the already existing Watson-based technology to both optimize the UI for the current system as well as providing a useful end-user product for application security using face-tagging – scanning images of faces to match to pre-set images within the applications database. The Watson Services are meant to be modular components that can be used by developers to connect with their overall application goals as reusable resources.

IBM Bluemix is a cloud platform that helps developers rapidly build, manage and run web and mobile applications. The program we worked towards involved both designing and developing mobile applications via Bluemix and enhancing the Bluemix system and community itself.
The initial project for this was the Spring into Bluemix Project Dashboard:
Helping plan, design and develop the system for non-technical product owners to run TopCoder challenges connecting with their BlueMix platform.
Promotional Site Design
Challenges for IA and Design of the Dashboard
The GE Data Classification App – to provide employees an active learning tool and in-the-moment reminder of how GE documents need to be handled based on their content and context.
Harmon Kardon AMX “is dedicated to integrating AV solutions for an IT World. AMX solves the complexity of managing technology with reliable, consistent and scalable systems comprising control and automation, system-wide switching and AV signal distribution, digital signage and technology management. AMX systems are deployed worldwide in conference rooms, homes, classrooms, network operation/command centers, hotels, entertainment venues and broadcast facilities, among others.”
They came to TopCoder to redesign the user experience for their tablet application with the premise that high net worth clients deserved a high value experience to match the needs of the customers in managing their A/V systems primarily for residential set-ups. The initial experience was, honestly, minimally useful and didn’t provide easy to understand and use pathways for the various functions that the AMX Living System provides.
After doing some initial analysis and first approaches as mapping and wireframing, it became apparent that the needs for the application were much more complex than initially anticipated – so it provided the opportunity to examine every element and interaction to help the application become the experience the users deserved. Appirio started with cloud service installations for corporate clients, primary focused on Salesforce. The special twist with them is TopCoder, their crowdsourcing competitive platform through which they do a variety of projects for a wide range of needs with major corporations like GE, IBM, Salesforce, John Hancock and so on. The three areas of work are Design, Development and Data Science.
My role was User Experience Architect in the Design track, where I’d provide design direction for projects and programs for client needs. The three channels under Design were Wireframes, Visual Design and UI Prototyping.
The projects and programs I’m sharing from the work done with Appirio and TopCoder are largely mobile platform based, but include everything from industry metric dashboards to games designed to teach employees their company’s HR processes.
During my time with Critical Mass, I worked with a number of exciting and forward-thinking clients on an array of exciting projects.
Examples include: AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, United Airlines, Brita Water Filters and Citibank.
